Over the last week or so, I’ve started to notice a real chill in the air. Reluctant to put on the heating just yet, I’ve taken to wearing two jumpers around the house, sleeping beneath two duvets and donning a fetching pair of slipper socks everywhere.
Unfortunately, with the drop in temperature, my household has been hit by endless bugs. Chicken pox, sickness bugs, several colds – you name it, we’ve had it! With Ezra having recently started nursery (especially when you add in the fact that he likes to keep Amir and I up from 4am!), we’ve been full of sniffles and fighting off constant colds.
By about week 3 of living in a quarantined, bug-laden house, I got a bit tired of it and set to creating these Immune-Boosting Lemon & Turmeric Elixir, AKA Super Shots. Full of goodness and anti-bacterial / anti-viral / anti-inflammatory properties, these little shots (which, I might add, taste so good that even the kids ask for them – they call it “spicy juice!”) are perfect for stopping any winter bugs or nasties in their step.
Just incase you wondered, here’s what they contain – and why you need these little miracles in your life:
Carrot – Rich in the powerful anti-oxidant beta-carotene (the same compound that gives them that beautiful colour), as well as that health superstar, vitamin C.
Lemon – As one of my favourite nourishing ingredients, lemon is fantastic to add to your winter and Autumn diet. It’s a great source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system, and is also purifying and helps to flush out and eliminate any toxins from the body.
Turmeric – As an age-old anti-inflammatory, turmeric has been used medicinally across Asia for thousands of years. It contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant.
Ginger – Ginger is another ancient wonder and is closely related to turmeric. It’s often used to aid digestion and fight the flu, thanks to the compound Gingerol, which has impressive anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects.
Manuka or raw honey – When it comes to honey, buying quality is important! Overly-processed honeys, bought in supermarkets, often have very little of their health benefits remaining. However, reach for the good stuff, and it will work wonders! Manuka in particular is one of the world’s richest antimicrobial and healing foods.
Pink salt – Not just a pretty face, pink salt contains all 84 trace minerals and elements that are found in our bodies. Isn’t that amazing? These include potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Unbeelievable Bee Prepared – It’s no secret that I love bee-based products, and these little capsules are miracle workers! They’re great to take every day to support a healthy immune system and contain ingredients you’re not likely to find in any multi-vitamin. The key ingredient is bee propolis, which has been used for centuries to kill bacteria, colds and flu.
When you put it like that, why wouldn’t you want to add these shots to your morning routine…?
- Creates 10 shots, or roughly 400ml of liquid
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 small carrot, peeled and roughly chopped
- Juice one lemon (or more, to taste)
- 1 tsp good-quality turmeric powder (I used Lucy Bee)
- 1 inch ginger, peeled and minced
- 1-2 tbsp of raw or Manuka honey OR a drop of maple syrup, if desired, for vegan (to taste)
- Pinch pink salt
- 5-7 capsules Unbeelievable Health Bee Prepared Daily Defence (omit for vegan)
- Pinch black pepper (black pepper enhances our ability to absorb turmeric)
- Simply blend all ingredients together until completely smooth. Stop and taste and adjust sweetness, if desired. Pour into 14 small, sealed bottles and serve as a shot each morning, shaking well before drinking.
