Positive Affirmations – And How to Use Them

What are affirmations?

Our minds are powerful things. They hold more control over our bodies, our wellbeing, our lives – even our dreams – than many of us may realise.

And yet, how often is your brain flooded with negative thoughts of self-doubt or even self-loathing? How often does your mind swirl and swarm out of control?

If you’re anything like I used to be, it may be fairly often. Yet, when we start to think like this, it’s easy for our whole lives to be impacted – we become more pessimistic, more negative, and our self-confidence and self-worth begin to nosedive and go into free-fall, too.

It’s almost as if these doubts become our reality.

There are many ways we can address our limiting beliefs, and if you have particular traumas or painful emotions to process, then I couldn’t recommend therapy enough.

However, affirmations can be a simple, effortless way to make big strides towards a kinder, more compassionate brain. They also add a sprinkling of magic to your day. In fact, they can fill you with positivity and love – all before you even leave your bed!

What Are Affirmations?

Many people will hear the word “affirmations” and associate them with being spiritual. However, the truth is – they can mean different things to all of us!

I’ll freely admit that, at first, I was doubtful of affirmations. Yet, the more I grew, the more I started to let go of my past, the more I realised that I wanted to change my mindset. Positive affirmations became one of my greatest rituals and tools – a practice to lean on when self-doubt was starting to cloud my brain, when I was telling myself I wasn’t good enough, or that I wasn’t beautiful when I looked in the mirror.

In short, they changed my way of thinking forever.

Put simply, affirmations – which you might also hear called mantras – are powerful sentences or statements which can help you to overcome negative thoughts or patterns. They’re designed to help both the conscious and subconscious mind, enabling us to shake off the cloak of our limiting beliefs for good.

How Can Affirmations Help Me?

Affirmations are a soothing, easy way to practice self-love, boost self-esteem and push the door wide open to our true potential and Higher Self.

They can also be used for powerful self-healing (for example, I say the affirmation “I am a magnet for money. Money and abundance flow to me effortlessly and easily.” to heal my own past traumas with money), to step away from self-sabotage and to let go of limiting beliefs, as well asĀ  overcoming self-doubt and the dreaded Imposter Syndrome.

Positive affirmations can also:

  • Ease anxiety and stress
  • Help you to overcome “bad” habits
  • Boost productivity
  • Help you to take action towards goals
  • Put you into a feel-good mood!
So, What’s the Catch?

Well, in all honesty – not much. Affirmations are simple, time-effective – and gentle!

However, I get that they aren’t for everyone, and that’s OK. I just ask that you try to keep an open mind and approach them with curiosity and compassion. It’s also worth noting that it does take (a small) commitment from you, in that you need to do them daily to see the true effects.

How to Practice Positive Affirmations

Thankfully, positive affirmations don’t have to be time-consuming or complicated – and you don’t have to over-think things. You can also do them wherever you are (yes, stop and do some right now!), even from your bed or on your morning commute.

All you need to do is find yourself a spare minute and have a go. You don’t need to say your affirmations out loud, either! How you practice them is entirely up to you. You could also repeat them as a mantra in your head, or you could write them down on paper and keep them close to your heart.

However, I encourage you to try to feel the affirmations as you repeat or write them – and make sure you state them as though they are already true. This is when you’ll really start to see the magic happen!

Repeat them throughout the day (if you find yourself forgetting, it helps to hook them on to various “anchors” such as brushing your teeth, or waiting for your kettle to boil ready for your morning coffee) and see how you feel afterwards.
